The Palouse is a world-class photographic destination. Filled with classic barns, old trucks, abandoned farmsteads, prairie schoolhouses, and occasional lone trees, the region offers photographers unparalleled, spectacular landscapes and classic shots of Americana. Sometimes referred to as “America’s Tuscany,” the Palouse is an expanse of rolling hills covered by fields of wheat and other crops occasionally cut by canyons or pierced by high buttes and populated with isolated farms and small towns. The Palouse covers over 6,000 square miles and the best way to make use of your time there is with the services of a guide, one who knows the region well and lives close by.
I offer private, customizable, individual or small group workshops of 1 to 5 (or more) days in the Palouse. One day workshops will last from sunrise to sunset on a single day. Multi-day workshops will include and evening session, followed by one or more full days, and ending with a morning session (for example, a 4-day workshop will actually cover 5 days and require 4 nights lodging).
The Palouse is four-season country, and I offer workshops anytime of the year. Each season offers a different look.
Spring – capture the classic Palouse look of green hills in your images. Mid-May through mid-June are considered to be the prime photographic season. In the spring you will undoubtably see other photographers, however, I will lead you to plenty of places where we will be alone. Lodging can be problematic, so advanced planning is advised.
Summer – golden hills and harvest. Summer presents the second most popular time for Palouse photography, providing shades of gold rather than shades of green. While wildfire smoke can sometime limit visibility from the big vistas like Steptoe Butte, many beautiful images can still be made with the bonus of capturing harvest scenes.
Autumn – fall color mixes with harvested fields. Fall presents a time to capture some truly unique images of the Palouse. Scattered cottonwoods, locust, and aspen trees provide color accents to the remains of golden stubble and freshly plowed fields.
Winter – fresh green growth with or without snow. When the Palouse is snow-covered, it is magical. Even when the snow is absent, the new green growth of winter wheat provides classic landscapes.
